Calamine lotion
Brands Names: Calamine
- Form of administration: Lotion
-
Why is the drug here:
This is a basic medication, natural and highly effective in treating different skin irritations. Reminds me of my childhood.
-
Purpose of treatment:
For relieving skin irritation. A lot of parents remember from their own childhood the “whitewash” being applied on those suffering from the Chickenpox. Practically, today it can be used for treating the same condition, or many other skin lesions due to insect bites.
- Ingredients: The active ingredient is called Calamine and it is a Zinc oxide. It causes drying of the skin pores, and therefore locally anesthetizes the skin. When preventing itchiness, the risk for secondary infection decreases.
-
How to use:
Shake before use and then apply a thin layer on the irritated area. You can use this lotion a few times a day for a couple of days.
-
Benefits:
No other active ingredients such as steroids. Relieves the itchiness and irritation immediately, and dries lesions.
-
Side Effects:
Uncommon.

Another word from the doctor:
Luckily, pediatrician sees Chickenpox less and less these days, thanks to the varicella vaccine given during childhood. See in the next link.
