Chloramphenicol
Brands Names: Chloramphenicol eye ointment, Golden Eye, Synthomycin
- Form of administration: Ointment
-
Why is the drug here:
An antibiotic ointment that is widely used in children and adults.
-
Purpose of treatment:
The ointment is available in two concentrations. Do not switch between the different concentrations.
Concentration of 3% – intended for the treatment of skin infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to this antibiotic. From my point of view, the use of this antibiotic ointment for the treatment of skin infections should be limited. There are a few specific infections where I would prefer this ointment over other antibiotic ointments.
Concentration of 5% – intended for the treatment of eye inflammation. In this ointment also, despite the antibiotic range against many contaminants, in my opinion there are almost always a more proper alternatives.
- Ingredients: The active ingredient is called Chloramphenicol and it is actually an antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against many bacteria and other contaminants.
-
How to use:
Apply to the affected area 3-4 times a day, usually for a few days. With an eye infection it can be applied until the inflammation passes.
-
Benefits:
The ointment is cheap, well-known and is found and used in many households.
-
Side Effects:
I do not see any significant side effects with the use of these two concentrations. Some children who are sensitive to the ointment, sometimes develop redness and swelling in the application area. In these cases, stop using and go see your pediatrician.
